Now available! luxuriously comfortable and breathable Domino Pads (Reusable Cloth Menstrual Pads)!
The perfect pad for your period, pregnancy and postpartum.
I've never used reusable pads before. Why should I?
U.S. women landfill or incinerate 11.3 billion disposable menstrual products per year.
Reusable menstrual products are not just better for the planet but also are more comfortable to wear. Many women report shorter, milder periods once they discontinue the use of disposable menstrual products that have been bleached and contain synthetic gelling crystals.
Are the fabrics you use organic/biodegradable/recyclable?
All bamboo fabrics are blends of bamboo and organic cotton.
Bamboo velour has a small percentage of synthetic fiber (2 percent) for durability.
Wind Pro is not biodegradable however it can be recycled as polyester where available.
We have investigated the option of using washable wool as an alternative to WindPro but there currently are no resin-free washable wool materials available on the market.
The majority of washable wool is made washable by covering the fibers with a synthetic resin which is of course not really desirable for customers choosing wool because they want natural materials.
If resin-free washable wool becomes available, wool backed Domino Pads may become available in addition to WindPro fleece.
How many pads will I need?
How many pads you will need will greatly depend on your own 'flow' as well as what absorbencies you choose. It will also depend on how often you do laundry. In other words it really varies by user.
Many customers have told us that our heavy absorbency pads hold more than reusable pads from other brands so you may be able to use fewer pads.
It's always best to just buy a few in different absorbencies (check out the variety pack!) to get an idea of what works well for you before buying a whole stash.
A stash of about a dozen pads works well for most people.
Care Instructions for
Domino Pads made with WindPro and Bamboo Velour:
Please wash your pads before using them for the first time. If you are sensitive to certain detergents you could even wash them twice before use: once without detergent to flush out any detergent residue, once with a gentle detergent of your choice.
Optional: cold rinse before washing may keep stains from setting
Wash on medium (105 degrees Fahrenheit/ 40 degrees Celsius)
Avoid fabric softeners
Do not use bleach
A detergent with less residue building ingredients will ensure maximum absorbency (see this
LINK for examples)
Dry on low
The temperature recommendations follow the care instructions of Malden Mills, the manufacturer of Wind Pro.
Stains sometimes occur in the natural fiber topped pads. However, this is limited if the pads are rinsed out or soaked in cold water immediately after use (or use optional step above).
You can also use mild soap or a small amount of laundry detergent to scrub the pads with cold water, rinse and wash later.
Especially for the hand dyed pads we do not recommend the use of peroxide as it may lead to fading of the gorgeous colors.
Drying cloth pads in sunlight can help to fade stains. Keep in mind that stains are simply a discoloration of the fiber and to not affect use, softness or hygiene.
Most customers simply wash their pads with their regular clothes.
If you are using cloth diapers you may also wash your pads with your diapers as long as care instructions are compatible. For example care instructions for pocket diapers like Fuzzi Bunz state not to exceed temperatures beyond 95 degrees Fahrenheit so it would be safe to wash your pads with them.
However if you use diapers that are washed on much higher temperatures (pre-folds, etc.) it may exceed safe temperatures for Wind Pro.
The soaker fabrics have been washed twice on hot before sewing. As with all natural fibers, absorbency will increase the more often they have been washed.

*Other cleaning tips:
I have both hand-dyed and natural bamboo. The hand-dyed bamboo is easier to care for since stains don't easily show. But I was able to preserve my natural bamboo pads stain free! Immediately after use, I scrub the stain with Perla soap and soak it in cold water overnight. The next day, if there's still some stain left, I scrub it with Perla again and leave it under the sun with the soap. I'm usually able to wash of the stain completely at the end of the day.
